Prof. Dr. Maurits S. Berger, LLM, graduated in Law and Arabic Studies. He is a professor of Islam and the West at Leiden University and the director of the Leiden Islam Academie. Previously, he worked as a lawyer in Amsterdam and spent seven years as a researcher and journalist in Cairo and Damascus. His specialties include modern Islamic thought and Islamic law.
Prof. Berger is also a senior research associate at the Clingendael Institute for International Relations in The Hague. Additionally, he was a member of the Advisory Board on International Affairs at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2019. Prof. Berger serves as an advisor to both the government and civil society. He is actively involved in European public debates and policies concerning the Muslim world and Muslims in the West.
